I will share my experience and give you valuable tips on how to rent a car in Montenegro, ensuring a smooth and pleasant adventure on the road.

As a traveler exploring the beautiful country of Montenegro, again renting a car is a convenient and flexible option for navigating its stunning landscapes. My trip was pretty much ideal, I found that renting a car agency Tara-Car is an ideal choice for me. They are reliable and the 24/7 customer support.

What are the prices for renting a car in Montenegro?

If you are traveling this summer, it’s important to know that prices are very much UP all over the world, especially in Montenegro. The country is flooded with rich Ukrainian refugees, and they increased the standard and costs.

So, car rental prices in Montenegro are higher than the last summer (2022). Keep in mind the duration of the rental and the time of the season will impact the most total costs.

Average prices range from 40€ to 140€ per day, depending on the car model. You can rent a Toyota Yaris for about 40€. Research local and international rental websites to find suitable deals for you. Also, sign up for newsletters on the rental websites, sometimes they offer discount codes you can use at checkout.

Rental Deposit

When renting a car in Montenegro, you will usually be required to provide a rental deposit as a security measure. This is a common practice with International agencies like Sixt, although most local agencies do not practice it. You can rent a car with them without a deposit. The Tara-Car agency, where I rented a car, also has this type of rental.

If you pay a deposit, the amount will depend on the car model. My recommendation is always to read the terms and conditions carefully before making a booking to understand the deposit requirements.

Keep in mind that the deposit will be chargeback to you upon returning the car in the same condition.

In Montenegro, you can basically rent a car everywhere. Podgorica is the most popular choice for car rental. Podgorica has good roads and is located in the central part of the country. The main airport in Montenegro – Golubovci, is only a 10-minute drive from the center of the capital. Which makes it an ideal location to rent your car.

Podgorica serves as a transport hub with easy access to the main highways connecting different regions of Montenegro. Renting a car in Podgorica was good for me since was me to explore both the northern and southern parts of the country with ease.

How Safe is It to Travel to Montenegro by Car?

Traveling in Montenegro by car is generally safe and pleasant. The roads are well maintained and the country is rich in breathtaking nature along its coastal and mountainous areas.

I especially recommend driving the panoramic roads of Montenegro. Certainly, I must draw your attention to the fact that some roads are very challenging and bad in the mountainous part of Montenegro. With that, you must drive carefully.

In the south, the situation is much better, all roads are very good and passable.

Also, be careful as their driving habits on the road may differ from what you are used to. It is recommended that you follow the traffic rules to avoid Police tickets.

When to Visit Montenegro?

Montenegro is a suitable holiday destination throughout the year, and each season offers its own unique charm.

Summer, from June to August, is the peak tourist season when coastal towns and beaches come alive. The weather is warm, perfect for beach activities and exploring the stunning Adriatic coast. During this period it is also the most crowded, so if, like me, you are a person who avoids crowds, I suggest you visit Montenegro during the spring.

Or in autumn (from September to November). During winter weather can be good, so if you’re on budget prices a much more affordable.

Additional tips for renting a car in Montenegro

One-way rental fee

Picking up a car at one location and dropping it off at another will get extra charges of around 50 EUR.

This can add to your costs, so plan your trip well before booking.

What documents do you need to rent a car in Montenegro?

To rent a car in Montenegro, you just need a valid national driver’s license and passport. The driver’s license does not need to be in English or have an International Driving Permit (IDP).

Do you need an international driver’s license?

I see on many TripAdvisor threads that people ask do they need an international drivers licence to drive in Montenegro. The short answer is you do not need an international driver’s license.

Take a picture of the car before renting

One of the best things I’ve read on travel forums is the advice to take photos of the car when they hand over the keys to you.

This simple trick can save you from potential disputes or misunderstandings with the rental company regarding the condition of the car upon return. Take photos of any existing scratches, and damages, both on the exterior and interior of the car.
